2014 is officially here! New year’s resolutions, personal goals, and a positive outlook are probably top of mind. But have you thought about your home and what goals you should set to keep it in tip-top shape this year? Focus on these things, according to HGTV.com, and you’ll be set!

  • Streamline the stuff. Go room to room and de-clutter, donating anything unused to charity.
  • Make it safe and sound. Check for health hazards such as radon and carbon monoxide, clean out the dryer lint from the vents and ducts behind the dryer, and make sure your bathrooms and attics and properly ventilated.
  • Shrink your bills. Cut your electricity bills by turning off lights as you leave a room, installing fluorescent light bulbs, drying clothing outdoors when possible, and watering your yard less.
  • Set a system for weekly cleaning and stick to it. Do the dishes daily and for weekly cleaning, focus on one type of cleaning at a time before moving on to something else.
  • Get your place ready for entertaining. Spending more time with friends and family may have topped your list of resolutions, so make your home more entertaining-friendly by adding pops of color to your décor, rearranging the furniture for a more conversational layout, or adding potted plants for a finished look.
