Toyota’s Historic Move to Plano Has Big Implications

by Tracy Hookstra | April 8, 2015

If you live in Collin County, you’re sure to have heard about the Toyota Motors North American groundbreaking on their new megalithic headquarters in Plano at least three times this week.

If you haven’t, we’ll go back a bit. Toyota, the largest car manufacturer in the world, decided in a secretive meeting with Plano officials in 2014 to move its current locations, which are spread across California, Kentucky, New York, and Washington, D.C., to one spot: Plano, TX. Reportedly, Plano offered Toyota a $40 million investment via the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF).

Soon, Toyota scouts stealthily descended upon Plano, Frisco, and surrounding cities in tight-lipped droves. They searched out luxury neighborhoods, like Chapel Creek and Stonebriar in Frisco, and Willowbend in Plano real estate for sale, trying not to stand out like sore thumbs.

Not without raising a few eyebrows, they questioned the in-the-know locals and businesspeople, –“Where are the best schools in Frisco?”

–“Where are the best neighborhoods in Frisco?”

–“Where are the luxury homes in Frisco?”

–“Who are the best real estate agents in Dallas?”

Toyota then made the formal announcement, they would indeed be relocating their entire employee base from across three states and the District of Columbia, to scenic Plano, Texas. Busloads of Toyota employees who would be potentially relocating came exploring the DFW area in the footsteps of the first Toyota scouts.

The areas around Legacy West, the site of the new corporate campus, are preparing for the economic boom the relocation of some 4,000 Toyota employees will certainly bring. By now, there are about between 50 to 350 employees already working in temporary offices at the site. The first Toyota “pioneers” came in mid-to-late 2014. Phases of Toyota employee relocation will occur annually until the expected opening date sometime in 2017.
